Lil' Soups vs Lil' Broths: Which Does our Cat Prefer?
We will preface this by mentioning that we have a very opinionated, very picky, and very vocal Siamese cat. She knows what she wants and does not accept anything less - we respect that. Of course, we still have hope when we see a cute new treat at the store that she might love it, so we buy her a lot of new foods to try.
Usually, she will humor us and lick it before abandoning it on the floor. It’s actually quite sweet of her.
Due to our cat being an only child, and us just being suckers in general, she gets every single treat that you can imagine. We feel like seasoned experts in the field of cat treats and food. We have our opinions about Temptations, Friskies, Blue Buffalo, Greenies, and basically every option out there. We even have varying opinions of the exact same product, depending on if the flavor is salmon, tuna, or tuna + salmon. That's the level of cat food commitment we have around helpmepick.info. You don't even want to imagine our level of commitment to "reviewing" cat toys. Our most recent purchase included a paper bag that was catnip scented, and we cannot wait to see the minutes of fun she has with that. We have yet to publish a single cat toy review, but we still buy dozens upon dozens with the intention of getting around to it. Maybe, deep down, we know that it's truly impossible to review every single cat toy we purchase and we're just using that as an excuse...
Anyway, we had a strange experience with her the other day when we brought home an adorable little soup cup. She knows it’s time for wet food at 5:00 pm, but she did not recognize the Friskies Lil’ Soups I set in front of her last Monday. Hesitantly, she sniffed in and prepared to give it her usual lick-and-ditch. Instead, she devoured it in less than a minute. I have never seen her so ravenous. Even with her favorite pate, she nibbles on it throughout the night. This was a licked-clean cup that I had to search around our apartment for, because she had attacked it in an attempt to get every last drop. Somehow, she pushed it under the bathroom door (that is nowhere near her food bowl). Suffice to say, she is a realllllly big fan of the Lil’ Soups..
While grocery shopping, I went to grab her a few more - but this time, I noticed some other brands. Thus, an idea was born for a new This or That: battle of the cat soups.
Today’s challenger is the Delectables Savory Broth.
Key differences:
- Friskies Lil’ Soups is in a single-serve, disposable cup that you can feed your kitty directly from. It is definitely easier to clean up than the Delectables (which is a pouch), and you don’t have to dirty a dish.
- The Lil’ Soups is 0.2 ounces smaller and costs a few cents more. Nothing crazy, but it’s good to know.
- Lil’ Soups is a creamy, blended broth with a few chunks of meat. The Savory Broth is a thinner broth with a lot of chunks of meat. If your cat has a preference between the two, keep that in mind.
Our taste test revealed that the Delectables Savory Broth was underwhelming, and the creamy Friskies Lil’ Soups was the obvious winner. The bowl was left with over half of the broth left, and I don’t think she ate a single salmon chunk. She did enjoy what she had, considering she didn’t even lift her head for about thirty seconds, but she was over it after that.
While our cat's opinion is of course very important, so is the parental experience. We have to acknowledge that the Lil' Soups being in a single-serve container is truly so much more convenient. You don't have to worry about transferring the ingredients nor any real cleanup after. Simply throw away the cup when you are done and that's it. The Delectables Savory Broth's were a much different experience, since they had to be transferred to a bowl before eating. We could see this as an especially important factor for elderly cat owners, as you won't have to do as much manual labor with Lil' Soups.
If you trust our cat, go with the Friskies Lil’ Soups, available at Amazon, Chewy, Target, and Walmart. At the time of writing this, Chewy had the best price.
Why are Lil' Soups our clear winner?
Lil' Soups gets a lot of points based purely on our cat's taste test, but we also try to be good parents and think about the future. Lil' Soups only have 8 ingredients, which is something we can always get behind. On top of that, we like Lil' Soups for how easy they are for our cat to enjoy. If you have a senior cat or a cat with teeth issues, they should have a lot easier time consuming Lil' Soups than some other types of wet foods.
One thing to note is that Lil' Soups are not considered a complete meal. Purina states that Lil' Soups are a compliment to a balanced diet, and should not be a cat's main source of nutrition. We free-feed our cat Blue Buffalo Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe with LifeSource Bits for most of her nutrition. The daily wet food (of which Lil' Soups are taking up most of the rotation) is in addition to her dry food.
